Homeschooling At Our House

We started kindergarten last week in our house, and we started in August for a lot of reasons. While I have wanted to share about our plans for this school year, there is one thing I need to say first.

While I enjoy sharing about our schooling adventures, and yes, we are a homeschooling family, I sometimes get odd responses to this, and often it is of a defensive nature, which kind of confuses me.

So let me tell you my secret....

...If you don't homeschool your children, that is perfectly fine with me.

Seriously.

Just because we homeschool does not mean I hold it up as the standard for all families.

Although there is one standard I do hold up for Christian families - ask God and He wants you to school your children and then do it, even if you are unsure. If you have done that, and are doing that, then I will totally support your schooling choice, even if it is polar opposite of what we are doing. If you have not, I would encourage you to ask Him!

That is how we ended up homeschooling. And yes, this has been confirmed as the method of schooling for Baby too.

If my knee cooperates I will share some of our homeschooling plans starting tomorrow.

How do you school your children? What is your favorite part of that method?

That is a very good way to put that. We've had odd responses to our choice to homeschool as well...
We honeschooled our oldest two until this year and they will be attending our church's school. I will be teaching math there part-time, while baby naps and preschooler serves as my "teacher's aide." It works for us and we feel called to serve the school right now. It is SOOO important to ask God what He desires as far as education and training. His plan is the best plan, of course:)

LOVE this. So many people are incredulous when I tell them of our plans to homeschool our oldest in September (Kindgergarten, as well.) I just say...for now, it's the right decision. When it's not, we'll do something else! Good luck, we're pretty excited :)

We continue to use Rod & Staff and Pathway Readers with my son. I supplement with extra reading lists: classic fiction and non-fiction.

I have to begin K for my four year old. She turns five in early September which makes her school aged. You can mail off a letter mentioning that you want to skip K due to maturity issues, but the process of accountability to the state for her schooling begins in the fall.

I still need to file the paperwork which is due at the end of the month.

We are doing a relaxed K - Starfall, Reader Rabbit CD-ROM, and worksheets for handwriting. She has a lot of learning toys as well - loves to do her own exploring with tangrams, sorting, building, puzzles, etc.

We've got a lot of homeschoolers in the area, so it's not that unusual.

I love how you worded your post! We, too, are a home schooling family. However, I work, so that in itself brings up another sort of conversation from folks--some encouraging, but others not so much. Oh, well, like our schooling choice we prayed about my working and this was the answer! It works for our family!

Up until a few years ago, I was a college professor. I job-shared with another woman, who was a home schooling mom to a Jr. Higher and High Schooler. She was very encouraging. Then....we moved from CO back to WA. I have found a great support group here and our church is filled with several home schooling families.

Currently, we are using "My Father's World" for our main curriculum. For my 2nd grader, we are using Singapore Math, a spelling curriculum, Apologia Science (we are in a co-op) and Primary Language Lessons. For my Kindergartner, she is using MFW Kindergarten, as well as sitting in on MFW Adventures with her brother. I incorporate some of the reading list from Ambleside Online.

I look forward to reading more of your home schooling journey.
